One of the best ways to become a more positive individual is to develop an attitude of gratitude. Here are five suggestions for improving your positive outlook on life and developing a grateful attitude.
Your outlook on life is paramount to daily living. Positive and happy individuals not only have a much more successful and joyful life, they also tend to live a healthier life. But how do you gain a positive attitude? One of the best ways to become a more positive individual is to develop an attitude of gratitude. Here are five suggestions for improving your positive outlook on life and developing a grateful attitude.
1. Always say thank you
“Thank you” is a simple phrase that should be said multiple times throughout the day. When you say “thank you,” you realize all of the small acts of kindness people do for you throughout the day. You become more apt to recognize someone opening a door for you at the store, your husband picking up his dirty socks or even your children making their bed without being asked five times.
Besides continually saying “thank you,” write it. Make it a habit to send thank you cards on a regular basis. You can thank someone for their kindness, for bringing you a plate of treats or even for being a friend. A genuine thank you will not only brighten up the recipient's day it will brighten yours up, as well.
2. Develop a habit of prayer
Prayer is one of the best ways to recognize all of the blessings you receive each day. While praying, spend time expressing thanks for all of the tender mercies in your life, along with all of the large blessings you are given. There are so many things that we use and receive every day that often go without any thanks. For example, when was the last time you expressed gratitude for computers to make work easier, cell phones to communicate with family or games for spending time with friends? Each night before you say your prayers, think about your blessings and express thanks. You may notice that your prayers go longer than usual.
3. Create a gratitude list
If you are feeling down, creating a gratitude list is an excellent way to turn that negative attitude around. There are several ways to keep a gratitude list. You can create an on-going list of everything you are grateful for in your life. This could be anything from experiences to physical possessions. Or, you could start a gratitude journal. Each night before you go to bed write down three to five things that you were grateful for throughout the day. You may be surprised to find that your list of only three to five things easily becomes 10 things or more.
Enlist the help of a friend, spouse, child or other individual to help you establish an attitude of gratitude. Each day, or on a bi-weekly or weekly basis, tell that person everything you are grateful for and why. When you begin to search for things to tell the individual, you begin to look for things that have meaning. You begin to recognize those things that make a difference in your life.
5. Create a gratitude wall
You can have your entire family develop an attitude of gratitude by creating a gratitude wall. Find a large white board, cork board, or even your fridge and ask everyone in your family to write down something they are grateful for and display it on the wall. This is a fun way to involve all of your family members and express thanks.
Being grateful for your many blessings will affect several aspects in your life including your mental and physical health. Each day do your best to develop an attitude of gratitude. You will be grateful you did.
