We all want to be in a relationship that will last forever. But how do you know if you've found the right one? Your friends and family are all voicing their opinions and that can be overwhelming. Of course you want to know what they think, but the most important part of a relationship is how you feel about it.
However, even that is easier said than done. Sometimes knowing how you feel is also really hard (what does twitterpated really even mean?). While we may not be able to answer that, you can know if you've got a good thing going if you don't:
Fear about what they are thinking or what your future together may hold, usually signifies that something isn't quite right. You should have confidence in the other person and peace when you are together. Even when thinking about that person, you should feel happy and calm, not fearful or nervous. Fear is a sign that you are not in a good relationship.
2. Hide things from them
It's a problem if you are hiding past relationships, chronic illnesses, goals or feelings. You might feel that you are doing this because you think they won't accept you if they knew the truth, but that's unhealthy and unfair. Your person deserves honesty (and most can tell when you aren't being truthful with them). Plus, a lack of trust can lead to jealousy, cheating, snooping and general unhappiness - things no one wants in a relationship.
3. Hide the relationship from others
It's not healthy to be ashamed of your relationship, so if you find yourself shying away from mentioning your special someone at a work party or make an excuse to attend dinner with friends by yourself, pay attention.. Being in a relationship should make you happy enough to want to share your joy with the world. Additionally, this secrecy will most likely breed feelings of shame and unhappiness for your partner - who wants to feel like they have to be hidden?
4. Resent their success
A relationship should be bursting full of support and love. If your partner gets a promotion or an award and you resent them for it, you do not truly love them. It's harsh, but true. You should think of each other as partners working together to become the best you both can be.
5. Feel like you limit your time with friends and family
It's one thing to want to spend time with your sweetheart but it's another if you don't feel like you can spend time with other people because you are in a relationship. Your relationship is important, but it's also crucial to spend time with other people. When you are in a relationship you should be a part of each other's lives, but that doesn't mean you have to cut out friends and family completely.
If you feel like you could make a great soap opera with your love story it's probably not a good thing. There are always highs and lows in a relationship, but if yours is always up, down, back and forth it's not healthy. You should be moving forward together instead of holding each other back. If you feel like there is too much drama between you and your sweetheart, you should sit down and talk to each other and try to sort out some of the drama. If that's not an option, it's time to break up.
The right relationship means something different to everyone, but no matter what your definition is, you should always feel safe and loved. If you don't feel either, it is not a healthy relationship and it's time to get out. Instead, find someone who will cherish you and make you a better person.
