There are three words that are absolutely toxic to having a happy life or marriage, and those words are, "I will tomorrow." I know you've said these before, and I've said them more times than I want to admit. But today, you need to stop.
I'm not saying you have to take on every single thing you need to do in the next month, but take a look at your ever-growing list. Is there something on there about making your spouse happy? If there isn't, put it on because that's the most important thing you'll do every day.
Your marriage should be at the top of every to-do list you make. You should constantly try to nourish that precious relationship, but it's so easy to let it fall through the cracks with all your other important responsibilities.
Improving your marriage seems like a daunting task, especially if you're struggling, but it really doesn't have to be. Here are 10 things you can do right now to make your marriage better tomorrow:
1. Snuggle for five minutes
Whether you wake up a little earlier to snuggle in the morning or get in bed a little sooner to snuggle at night, that physical contact is so important. Having that loving touch will make you feel more connected and will strengthen your relationship.
2. Kiss for 15 seconds
You can definitely kiss longer than this, but kiss for at least 15 seconds every day. That short time will help you forget about all the chaos going on around you and will help you completely focus on your sweetheart.
3. Share the best and worst part of your day
Your spouse needs to know what makes you super happy and what makes you upset. When you talk about the best and worst parts of your days, it'll help you open up to each other and talk about deeper things in the future. Communication is crucial to a happy marriage.
4. Say "I love you"
This one seems obvious, but too many couples forget to say these simple words in the chaos of life. Make a conscious effort to sincerely tell your sweetheart how much they mean to you.
5. Give a genuine compliment
Maybe you tell your wife she looks pretty every day when you're rushing out the door, and that's great. But today, try looking in her eyes and telling her how intelligent she is. Tell her she's an incredible mom. Tell your husband you appreciate his hard work — it'll go a long way.
6. Kiss goodbye, hello, good morning and goodnight
These gestures seem so simple, but they're really so important. Having that short but sweet connection at the beginning, middle and end of the day will do wonders for your marriage and bring you closer as a couple.
7. Offer a back rub
It doesn't matter whether your sweetheart has had a long day or not — they could always use a good massage. This small gesture will let them know how much you care, and they'll likely return the favor.
8. Check something off their to-do list
It's hard to get everything done AND work on your marriage, so help your spouse out and do both at the same time. Husbands, make dinner tonight. Wives, take your husband's car to get washed. Small acts of service are so appreciated and will build your marriage.
This sounds like a silly, mundane task, but hear me out. Making the bed only takes a few minutes, but when you're doing it together you're actually getting some pretty good quality time. Phones are put away, you're working on a task together and you're probably communicating a little too. These are all aspects that are so important to a marriage.
10. Spend 15 minutes completely alone
Life is busy and I know it's hard to find 15 minutes, especially when you have kids, but that alone time is so crucial to your marriage. Turn off your phones and all other distractions for at least 15 minutes every day so you can be completely alone with your sweetheart. That will be precious time for the two of you and will make for a better marriage.
You don't have to do all of these things today. Choose one thing you're going to work on and do it every day until you have it mastered. Once you're snuggling for five minutes every day and it's part of your routine, add something else. These acts seem small, but they all make for a better marriage in the future.
