  • Mother Bunmi Laditan started noticing subtle changes in her daughter, Maya - changes that soon turned into alarming symptoms, like chest pain.

  • Laditan wondered what was causing the pain and soon realized the truth behind Maya's symptoms. Severe stress and anxiety caused by Maya's homework were causing this 10-year-old to have chest pain.

  • The mother of three then decided her anxiety-ridden-10-year-old daughter would not be participating in the extensive homework she was being assigned every night. She wrote a Facebook post saying, "My kid is done with homework. I just sent an email to her school letting [them] know she's all done. I said 'drastically reduce' but I was trying to be polite because she's finished."

  • Anxiety in a 10-year-old

  • Laditan goes on to explain that her intelligent daughter enjoys reading, researching, painting and learning. However, she's noticed changes in her daughter over the last couple of years. The worried mother said how [Maya] was "getting more and more stressed when it comes to school, and by stressed I mean chest pains, waking up early and dreading school in general." Maya is only 10 years old.

  • While Laditan's solution to Maya's symptoms is unorthodox, there are thousands of mothers that agree - complaining how kids of all ages (even as young as kindergarteners) have too much homework - and thousands more who disagree.

  • Homeschooling may be in the future

  • Laditan wanted to make sure that everyone knew she wasn't blaming her daughter's teachers for the stress. In a comment on herFacebook post, Laditan called them "incredible" ... but the mother goes onto explain that the stress is just too much, no matter how incredible her teachers are.

  • Laditan discusses how if the school won't cooperate with Maya's reduced work load, the mother will have no other choice than to home school. "I can't watch her unravel anymore and be filled with so much stress at age 10", Maya's mom explains.

  • Laditan understands that now is the point where she needs to step in and do everything she can for her daughter - before her anxiety leads to depression and other mental health issues.

  • The kids are all in bed and I'm about to lean in to some Netflix right now. I just wanted to say thank you. This has...

  • Does homework actually cause problems?

  • There are multiple studies showing that children who feel their lives are out of their control will likely be depressed or anxious. This lack of control can come from lack of creative play - which was one of Laditan's main concerns. Her daughter's 2-3 hours of homework each night was preventing Maya from being able to act like a child or spend time with family.

  • Laditan makes a good point when it comes to what really matters in a child's life. She says, "We all want our children to grow up and succeed in the world ... I don't believe for one second that academics should consume a child's life ... I just want her to be intelligent, well-rounded, kind, inspired, charitable, spiritual and have balance in her life."

  • Laditan hasn't yet posted whether the school has responded or not, but everyone is anxiously waiting for their response.
