6 reasons you need to take a 'mental health day' (even though you don’t have time for it)

  • If you're pressing snooze five (okay, seven!) times every morning, you're daydreaming about anything other than the tasks at hand and you aren't being as kind as you usually are, you are straight-up in need of a mental health day.

  • However, coordinating a mental health day can be impossible. You have priorities after all, but with some creativity, you can make it happen. Swap babysitting days with a friend, call in sick, reschedule, delegate your responsibilities and plan ahead.

  • If you think taking a day for yourself is selfish, just remember what they tell you on an airplane: you've got to put your own oxygen mask on before you help someone else. Honestly, you won't be able to help someone else put their mask on if you pass out halfway through. The same goes for mental health days: if you don't practice self-care, you aren't helping yourself or anyone else either.

  • 1. You'll be more productive when you get back

  • Studies show taking time off makes you more productive in the long run. Motivation is much like a muscle; it gets fatigued if it doesn't have an opportunity to rest and rebuild. So while it may seem that you don't have time to take a mental health day, the investment will actually pay off in the long run.

  • 2. You'll love people more

  • When you're experiencing high amounts of stress, you may feel more irritable. Taking a mental health day is the perfect remedy for this, as it allows you to fully appreciate your loved ones when you are feeling like your best self agian.

  • 3. You'll validate your own worth

  • Neglecting to take time to recharge is basically telling yourself you aren't as important as your job, as your to-do list or as other people. Be an advocate for yourself by choosing to honor your own value through a mental health day.

  • If you aren't giving your best self to your partner, you can't foster the best relationship. Therefore, if you want to improve the health of your relationship, give yourself a day off. Your partner will thank you.

  • When you are overwhelmed with life, your body physically absorbs stress, causing you to feel more tired, get sick more often, etc. So, not only is a mental health day advantageous for your mental health, but it does wonders for you physically.

  • At the end of the day, you can't do it all, 24/7. Love yourself enough to take the breaks you need so that you can be Superwoman the rest of the time.
