Some days, all that sounds good is cozying up in bed with a good movie and doing nothing. But as fate would have it, those days tend to pop up on the days where that isn't an option. Responsibilities. Blah.
The next time you're tempted to scrap any potential productivity for a day of nothingness, use this list to stay on track and maybe, just maybe, you can have your cake and eat it too.
Why do today what you can do tomorrow? Because procrastinating is bad! So let's call this time management. Make a list of what you need to accomplish between today and tomorrow. Accommodating for any deadlines, split the list in half. Now you have two digestible chunks to work with. Pace yourself and the work will feel a lot less daunting, as well as giving you time at the end of the day when you've finished your list.
Does an even, manageable workload sound like a bore? Then tackle your entire list today and designate tomorrow for doing nothing.
2. Take a nap
Sometimes it's not so much that you want a lazy day as it is you need one. Drink some caffeine and take a 20 minute nap. You'll wake up feeling refreshed (and the effects of that caffeine!) so you can power through. Turn off electronics, except for maybe some calming music, and don't think about what you need to get done! If you lay down for 20 minutes stressing over what you could be doing, you will end up worse than when you started, and you'll have wasted 20 minutes.
3. Eat comfort food
Even if your to-do list requires you to work all day, you've still got to eat! Take real breaks for your meals, and eat something that makes you feel good, but isn't terribly unhealthy. While chicken nuggets from McDonald's might taste better, they're going to leave you with that sluggish feeling for hours afterwards. My go-to comfort food is potato soup.
This is a great option if you need to make progress, but don't actually have to finish anything. Set a timer for 2 or 3 hours and get done however much you can in that time. When the timer goes off you're done!
It's important with this tactic not to get too consumed with finishing or perfection. Ask yourself, is this better than when I started? If the answer is yes, you've accomplished what you set out to do.
In a typical day, my to-do list usually has two sections: housework and computer work. What I like to do is get up, put on "working clothes" and tackle all the housework I'm going to do that day. If I need to run an errand, that's when this happens as well. Once I've tackled that, it's comfy time!
I do all of my blogging, networking, and designing curled up in bed. It's also where I plan our budget and make out meal plans. For me, it's where I do my best thinking. If you know you can't get things done in a relaxed setting, use your favorite lazy day outfit as motivation to get all the way through your list.
This isn't a fun tip! so much as a warning. I've personally dealt with depression throughout my life and one of the first warning signs that I'm falling back into that is not being able or wanting to do anything. If you find yourself feeling unmotivated to get started every day, don't be afraid to seek help.
