How men really feel about makeup

Ever wonder what men think about all that stuff you put on your face every morning? Wonder no more.

  • It's hard for you to get online without seeing a makeup tutorial or list of beauty hacks somewhere. Contouring, multimasking, root stamping (whatever all those things are). Women are involved in the makeup world almost every day, while us men happily remain ignorant.

  • While we know very little about any makeup processes you may go through, we do still have an opinion on that stuff you wear on your face. So here it is:

  • Generally, we like it

  • We do. If it looks good, it looks good. But wait, we have much, much more to say.

  • We can tell if you're wearing too much

  • Most women don't have to worry about this. Like us, you can also probably tell when too much is too much, but there is a special kind of woman that can't. When we see a girl wearing so much makeup that it's practically sliding off her face, our "fix-it" impulses start tingling and we want to just grab a butter knife to scrape all of that excess stuff off.

  • If you scratch your face and find your natural skin color is clearly a different shade of color than what your top layer of makeup is, we probably think you're wearing too much.

  • To those set on going "all natural"

  • That's fine. If you don't want to wear makeup, then don't. You do you. That being said, those that wear makeup will generally have a slight advantage over those that don't when it comes to looking attractive (which may or may not be your goal).

  • Maybe it shouldn't be that way, but as societal norms sit right now, that's how it is. It's totally fine to go without makeup sometimes, but knowing when to and when not to is important.

  • For example, using makeup to hide blemishes is usually a good idea. Heck, I got a zit on the point of my nose on picture day of my sophomore year in high school. My mom applied some cover up and saved the picture for me. It can do wonders.

  • Don't just wear it for us

  • Sure, you want guys to think you're attractive, but you thinking you look good is much more important than you thinking wethink you look good. You may have to read that sentence a couple more times for it to sink in.

  • I've had to learn how to do my own makeup for stage and television performances (yes, I'm a guy), so I've had a glimpse of the trouble you go through every day while putting that stuff on. It's expensive and there are enough different and confusing products to make anyone's head spin.

  • Stuff for eyebrows, eyelashes, eyelids, cheeks, jawline, etc. It's ironic that the point of such a huge variety of products is to make someone seem effortlessly beautiful. To a guy it looks like just that — effortless. Honestly, most of the time we don't even notice your makeup.

  • Therefore, make sure your main motivation for wearing makeup is that it makes you feel good about yourself. Please don't go to all that trouble just to impress us.

  • Use it to enhance, not mask

  • If we can't recognize you without makeup on — that's scary to us. Use it to enhance what already makes you beautiful instead of trying to be someone you're not. Hiding blemishes and acne is wonderful, but don't go so far as to hide your whole face.

  • We're not going to like you for how you do your makeup

  • "So, you're in love with my daughter. Why?"

  • "She does her makeup really well."

  • — Said no one, ever. If someone has said it, you don't want to be with them.

  • The bottom line

  • Don't let makeup be your best friend, but don't let it be your worst enemy.

  • Keep it simple. It shows us you're feminine, but not high-maintenance.

  • Wear it more for you than anyone else.

  • You're much more than your makeup.

  • If you're doing it right, we don't even notice — so don't stress too much about it. We don't.
