  • Channing Tatum's wife Jenna Dewan really stepped it up this year for her husband's birthday.

  • During a camping vacation with their daughter, Dewan celebrated her husband's 36th birthday by giving him a horse named Cajun, according to Uproxx.

  • He and his daughter went on a ride with the new horse, who will join Tatum's rescue horse that the couple saved last year, named Smoke.

  • Tatum called Cajun "the best birthday gift ever," according to Uproxx.

  • Dewan might have really done well with this gift, but not because she spent a lot of money on the horse (the average price of a horse these days goes for close to $2,419), but because she bought something that was personally meaningful to her husband.

  • When it comes to buying a gift for your spouse, couples should know that it really is the thought that counts.

  • "Our research shows that while gift-givers think they're being more thoughtful by picking out expensive gifts, the recipients don't appreciate the hefty price tag," Dr. Francis J. Flynn, an organizational psychologist at Stanford University, told The New York Times.

  • In a group of experiments, Flynn and other researchers found that gift prices mean more to the giver than the receiver. There's often more expectations put on a gift that costs more by the giver, even when recipients are more likely to recall gifts that have special meaning.

  • To find this, researchers had participants recall a birthday gift they received, and found that price didn't really matter. Givers who recalled gifts they gave out were more likely to put emphasis on the price.

  • But the researchers found that people who received expensive jewelry or fancy new tech gadgets weren't more grateful than those who received simpler gifts, like T-shirts and books, according to The Times.

  • It's not just what you get that matters, though. A study from 1992 found that how you wrap and offer someone a gift matters, too. The study - which gave 60 students a wrapped, unwrapped or "nontraditionally" wrapped gift - found people favored gifts that were nicely wrapped, while the unwrapped gift was the least favorite, according to The Guardian.

  • "Gift wrapping, through repeated pairing with joyous events in people's lives, has utility in cuing [sic] a happy mood which, in turn, positively biases attitudes," Daniel Howard, professor of marketing at Southern Methodist University, wrote in the study.

  • But finding a gift that works is easier said than done. It's definitely not as easy as Mrs. Tatum made it look. But there are plenty of popular and affordable gifts out there on the digital market that spouses can get each other for their birthdays.

  • Here's a look at 10 popular gifts for both wives and husbands that can be found for moderate prices on Etsy.
