When you think of something unusual, what comes to mind? Is it a piece of art, a person you treasure or somewhere you've been? What makes something unusual? Another word for unusual is unique, or one of a kind. Just like this video, beauty is found in unusual places. Five guys pounding on a piano may seem out of place but the music they create is awe inspiring.
Appreciating the unusual is like walking a beach you've walked all your life, and suddenly finding a vast bed of seaweed has washed ashore. The landscape has changed for a day, and it's breathtaking. Or, watching a man compete in the Olympics who has lost his legs, the beauty of his run is unique and amazing.
Sometimes unusual can be found closer to home, it's unusual for butterflies to hang out in our yard, but once we had them cover one of our bushes, my children and I sat very still in awe at this unique occurrence.
Our everyday lives can become pretty routine; get up, make breakfast, off to work, come home, do some laundry, eat some dinner, go to bed. When something unusual happens it's not only exciting, but it can be amazing and beautiful as well.
Life is a smorgasbord of experiences. When we open our eyes and minds to new tastes and experiences we take our children on the adventure with us. When we close our minds and eat the same thing, or do the same things day in and day out, we risk falling into a rut and dragging our children with us. The world is beautiful and varied. Look at the world as an adventure and your children will learn from your courage.
How to enjoy the unusual
Keep an open mind
. Unusual can be fun. Have you ever tried Maple Bacon ice cream? This unusual, and odd, combination of ingredients had my attention. I thought to myself, "Why not?" and took a bite. It was wonderful — like crystalized salted toffee. It was something I would never have experienced if I hadn't had an open mind. When you encounter something, or someone, unique keep an open mind. Take in something new and see how it changes you.
Seek to be unusual
My 8-year-old daughter came home proclaiming every girl at school had a certain pair of shoes, except for her. I asked her, "Do you like your shoes?"
"Yes," was her reply.
I continued, "Then why be like everyone else when you can be amazing?" Her smile was instant. Here was a little girl that loved to do new and unusual things, why would she want to be the same as everyone else.
What do you do that's unusual? What makes you amazing and sets you apart? You may think, I don't have any unusual talents, however everyone has at least one. Take some time to seek your unusual.
Look for the beauty in others who may be unusual, or unique
I have a cousin with Down syndrome. He is one of the most beautiful people I know. You can't help but smile when you see him. His expressions and emotions are genuine. When he smiles, his whole face lights up. The feeling he gives you is genuine acceptance and love. It can be unusual to find those feelings with others. He has given me an example of true happiness. His unique personality has touched many in our family.
When you look at others' differences, don't look at them as different, look deeper and see their inner beauty. Look at their unique ways of expression, movement or dress as beautiful. Change your perspective, and the unique person will change you forever.
Create the unusual
Go ahead, break the mold. Let go of your idea of normal and be yourself. Have you secretly always wanted a bright orange front door? Go for it! Being unusual and unique can be very liberating. Even if you have no secret desires to be different, let go of the hold others have on you. Shannon couldn't afford new knobs for her kitchen cupboards, so she began collecting unique ceramic and hand painted knobs one by one. Every cupboard door has a different knob. Her friends and neighbors love it. It is the first thing they notice when they enter her unique and happy kitchen. It reflects the adventure she lives. What began as a budget issue became a signature.
You are unique, there is no one in this world quite like you, so don't compare yourself to others. Albert Einstein said, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” Don't judge yourself on others accomplishments and don't allow others to judge you. You are beautiful. You are unique.
Dare to be different, and open your mind to the unusual. You will see more beauty in the world and people around you. Your attitude will infect your family with a taste for new experiences and the courage to try new things. Teach your family to see the world as an adventure and find joy as they live through their personal and unique experiences.
