Average or beautiful? It's a choice that really makes you think

Are you "beautiful" or "average?" See what happens when these women have to choose whether to walk through the door labeled "beautiful" or "average." Which would you choose?

  • If you had to describe yourself, would you choose average, beautiful or make no choice at all?

  • Woman across the world had to make this exact choice. Dove, with their Choose Beautiful campaign, created entrances in five different cities with the word "beautiful" over one door and "average" on the other to see which one women would choose.

  • Women in San Francisco, Shanghai, Delhi, London and Sao Paulo had the opportunity to choose—because, as Dove says, "...beauty is a choice." As the women came to the doors, some marched right through while others spent a little time thinking.

  • Many of the women went through the "average" entrance. Some talked about how they regretted it later. Others went through the "beautiful" side without hesitation. Some were convinced by friends to go through the beautiful door—including one mom who stopped her daughter from walking through the average side. One woman saw the two choices, turned around and left making neither choice.

  • What does it all mean? This sampling of how women view themselves really makes you stop to think. Which would you choose? Would you base that choice solely on your outward appearance? Or is there more to what makes you beautiful? Are we able to see ourselves in a non-judgmental way—regardless of what the world may tell us?

  • Are we afraid to choose beauty because we think the world only sees us only as average?

  • Of course, maybe we wouldn't choose "beautiful" or "average" to describe ourselves. What about loving, good listener, creative, thoughtful, inventive, curious or strong? How about courageous, fighter, smart or honest? Aren't those all admirable traits? Maybe those are what make us all uniquely beautiful.
