  • Dr. Joyce Brothers once said, “When you look at your life, the greatest happiness is family happiness.”

  • This quote has become a popular motto in hundreds of homes, has been placed on many walls and even made into several pins circulating on Pinterest. For me, as well as many other individuals, when I think of my most cherished memories, my thoughts first turn to my family members. From holidays, graduations, weddings and even the birth of new babies, my happiest times involve my family.

  • However, life is full of ups and downs. We won’t always have happy and enjoyable experiences in our families. Trials and challenges will come. However, if we really put forth a little effort, we can still find happiness in those dark and dreadful moments. Here are a few suggestions on how you can find happiness in your family.

  • Spend time together

  • While growing up, my parents made an effort to take our family on frequent family vacations. Even if we just drove an hour or two to the nearest city, we could stay in a hotel, swim, go out to eat and just spend time together. When children are young they want to spend time with their parents. They want to interact and have that assurance that their parents care for them and love them.

  • Say “I Love You” frequently

  • Hearing the words “I love you” provides a sense of comfort and peace. As a family, it is important that each member can turn to one another for guidance and love. These three little words are powerful. They let each family member know they can turn to one another when they need each other most. Saying “I love you” also doesn’t require any extra thought or effort. It is a simple task that can be accomplished multiple times on a daily basis.

  • Serve one another

  • Nothing can turn a terrible day around more than serving another individual, especially a family member. There is a feeling unlike any other that you can receive from serving those you love. And these actions do not have to be large or extravagant. They can be something as simple as putting their dirty dishes in the dishwasher, letting them use the bathroom before you or even picking up their dirty socks from off the floor.

  • Be optimistic

  • We must realize things will not always go according to plan, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be happy and positive about life. Optimism is key to establishing a happy home. It is contagious. Even when one family member has a positive outlook on a situation, it can rub off and spread until your entire family is happy and content with the situation at hand.

  • You don’t have to look too far to be joyful. Your family really can be your ticket to true happiness. Spend time getting to know them and establish relationships with them. Let them know you care through both your words and your actions and even though bad times may come around, put a smile on your face and remember, the greatest happiness you will find is family happiness.
