“She has done so much for me over all of these years,” Bill said in the video. “Now she can’t, but I can. I can return her love, and it’s a love that to me means I can do everything for her.”
Love is the most powerful emotion in the world. It’s difficult to find a movie, book, or song that doesn’t have themes all about love. Perhaps, love is the reason why people do what they do every day, instead of giving up when things get difficult. Love is a large influence and motivator in our everyday lives. Yet, it's hard to define.
Physicists say love is chemistry while philosophers call it a "passionate commitment." Since I'm neither a physicist nor a philosopher, I won't attempt to define love in my own words, but I will make a few points about love.
First of all, we can't fully love someone else unless we love ourselves. We have to gain enough self-confidence to trust someone else with loving us.
If you're single, don't feel alone while you look for your other half. Love isn't just between husband and wife. You can love your mom, dad, sibling, grandparent, aunt, and friend. As you show love for those in your life, you're preparing yourself to love your future husband and children even more.
Love is about service. As the old phrase goes, "actions speak louder than words." For many, love is best felt and shown when looking for opportunities to help those around you.
Similarly, people show their love for others when they put the needs of others in front of their own. It's natural to think of those around you when you love them.
So, what is love? It's a tricky question. A quote from the musical sensation "Les Miserables" sums up love in a beautifully simplistic way. “To love another person is to see the face of God,” Jean Valjean, the main character sang near the end of his life. If we really give all of our love to those around us without looking back, we might even be able to catch a glimpse at God’s love for each of us.
