How to create the habit of exercising everyday?

No files uploaded

I've had a crazy work routine and no time for exercise. As age start hitting I feel the need, but I confess that I do hate exercising. Where can I start?

I agree with sunshinemommy.  I made a list like that once, and it really helped me to stay on track.  It was nothing too hard, just small changes I knew I could make.  And I would keep it on my fridge to remind myself everyday what my goals were.  You can also try to hold yourself accountable by keeping a food journal and recording what you ate for the day.  Then you can compare that to your goal, and if there's room for improvement, make a plan for the next day.

lilies, I totally agree with mamabear.  I would make a weekly goal and track how you do.  Here are some examples:

don't eat past 8pm

eat 5 or more fruit and veggies a day

work out 4 times a week

portion control with every meal

Lilies I would start by changing one thing in your routine for the better. Like stop drinking soda, do some crunches before you go to bed, drink more water or make sure to get enough fruits and veggies in the day. If you are able to tackle that one goal, it will make it easier to change because now you can tell yourself, I did something great for my body today. Then your next goal can be a bit bigger. Good luck! Sometimes it is changing the little things before you are able to see the bigger results :)

I honestly believe that you have to find your "groove" in order for you to truly reach your goals. It could be doing an exercise video at home before everyone gets up or at the kids nap time or after breakfast. It could be joining a gym that is simple and has many things you could try to find out what you like. Or maybe it is going outside and going walking, running, hiking, or sports. If you find your groove then it will be much easier to go out and do it. It's just a matter of trying multiple things to figure that's out. Start slow and make goals that are totally reachable today. Good luck!

Thank you all so much for such great comments. I really need to stick to a time and schedule and just do it, and like sunshinemommy said, don't get discouraged if I miss one or other workout.

I like the idea of finding something that we like to do as well, it makes everything easier. In ouor busy lives, it's not a matter of getting off the couch (we don't even have time to seat in the couch much), it's the fact that we let any and every external factor influence us, including friends and family that 'sabotage' our diet and time.

Soon or later we do need to stand up and do it, or the scary number on the scale will bring a doctor's recommendation to move more and stay healthy before will be too late. Thanks everyone!

I used to get up at 5:30 for the gym, but I had a buddy. :) If you are going to do it early, I suggest a buddy who will help push you, and motivate you to keep going.

Neven Mounir, I am like you. I have plenty of time, and don't hate it, but it's hard for me to do. Another user commented on a question a while ago, and she suggested telling yourself "I work out at 6am (or whatever time you choose). That's just what I do." I was impressed with this because it can help to get you into a routine. If you tell yourself this, and stick to it, it will eventually become a part of your day, just like showering or eating.

Chris (and Neven), I think one way to start exercising is to start small. Don't tell yourself that you have to get up at 4:30am everyday and exercise for an hour and a half because if you're anything like me, 1) I probably wouldn't start, and if I did, 2) I would give up soon after because I HATE getting up early and 3) if I'm not perfect at something from the start, I give up (at least schedule wise). So make time when you know you will be able to exercise, start slow (maybe 30 min every other day), and don't give up if you miss a day or two. Just keep going. Now I need to go follow my own advice! :)

Neven Mounir, I agree with what has been said so far. I just have to put myself into auto pilot when it comes to exercise. I have been consistently exercising in some form or another my entire life and I still don't jump out of bed In the morning ecstatic to start my exercise routine! But I just do it, I roll out of bed, the first thing I do is put my workout clothes on, and I exercise.

Motivation to put yourself into autopilot with exercising comes from just forcing yourself to do it, set a time and don't make excuses. Eventually you will meet certain goals that you have in mind and that will be extremely motivating! Good luck

Neven, Sometimes motivation is so hard to get. What really helps me to gain some motivation is thinking of the reasons why I am exercising. Health, feeling better, losing weight, to have more energy - these are just some examples. Maybe you don't need to lose weight but exercising helps with so much more than that. It is so good for your heart. I truly believe that if you exercise regularly you will live longer than those who don't. And it is a natural anti-depressant. Meaning it will help you to feel happy and will clear your mind. And as Natbug said once those endorphins start to work you will feel better and more motivation will come.

According to a webmd website here are 7 incredible benefits to exercise:

1. It reverses the detrimental effects of stress.
2. It lifts depression.
3. It improves learning.
4. It builds self-esteem and improves body image.
5. It leaves you feeling euphoric.
6. It keeps the brain fit.
7. It may keep Alzheimer's at bay.

Here's the website to read more into the above info.

neven mounir, you just have to make yourself do it. The motivation doesn't come until you start feeling more healthy. You can't allow yourself to talk yourself out of it. Set a specific time to exercise, and just do it. Once those endorphins start moving through your body, you will begin to feel better, and that is where the motivation comes from.

Most honest people can find a few hours a week to schedule in exercise. It has to be scheduled because you will never "have time" if you don't plan ahead. Sometimes you have to adjust a few other things around, but your health is totally worth it! There are so many ways to exercise, the most important thing is to give it time to fall in love with something. Sometimes love takes time! I typically hate running, but after signing up for a 5K to help motivate a friend of mine I slowly realized that I didn't hate it as much anymore. Running is still not my favorite, but I've done it enough now that I ran on a Ragnar Relay team last year and had a GREAT time. My love is group fitness. I LOVE Les Mills BodyPump and RPM (group cycling) and I really enjoy finishing my week with Yoga.
Whether you are a lone wolf and do strength training and cardio training on the gym floor or make your way into the studio for group fitness you've gotta find something you CAN fall in love with. Other options out there: Zumba, CrossFit, P90X, Insanity... there are SO many options these days!

Chris, I have this same problem, between my work, and two small children. I have started exercising this week, actually, and have been three times. It's mostly support from my hubby. The time that I go is right after dinner. While I am gone, my hubby and four-year-old clean up the dinner mess, get into pajamas, and by the time I get home, we have scripture study, and brush teeth, and then they are in bed. You just have to pick a time to go, and not let anything else take that time. This is THE biggest key to being successful at starting an exercise routine. You HAVE to pick a time, and MAKE yourself do it. You will find all kinds of excuses, but you have to push through that. The next key is to start small. Get cardio and weight training in. We have a discussion in this group where we are checking in with each other, and it's nice to have people to answer to. Feel free to join in! It's called "Check-in, for that extra motivation."
